Chapter 1

I had just been transferred into Domino High. I was so nervous about making friends. When the teacher introduced me to the class as Natalie Zoosman, I slowly stepped into the classroom. I received many curious stares from the students. I noticed an old friend of mine seated in the back of the room. He looked the same as when I saw him when he was 10.

“Natalie, why don’t you sit next to Seto?” the teacher said pointing to my friend. I nodded and went to sit beside him.

“Hey, long time no see,” I whispered.

Seto grinned at me. “You haven’t changed a bit, Natalie,” he said.

“Would you like me to?”

“No. I like you just the way you are.” The morning seemed to drag by. This is just the homeroom class I’m talking about. I made some new friends during my other classes as well. Lunch finally came and I sat with Seto. We talked and laughed just like old times. I noticed a boy with spiky tricolored hair staring at me from across the room.

“Seto, who’s that?” I asked. He looked at who I was pointing to and sneered.

“That’s Yugi Muto.”

“Duel Monsters champ?” He nodded. “I take it by that sneer that you don’t like him very much,” I noted.

“Good guess.”

“I suppose you have reason not to like him.” Seto stiffened as he saw Yugi walking over to us. I smiled at him, but Seto simply frowned.

“Kaiba,” Yugi said.

“Yugi,” Seto replied coldly.

“Hi, I’m Yugi Muto,” he said to me, holding out his hand. I remembered seeing him on the news channel after he’d won the DM tournament. He had been very short then, but now he was tall and quite a handsome young guy. I blushed when I shook his hand.

“I’m Natalie Zoosman,” I replied. I could feel Seto tapping my shoulder.

“Let’s go,” he urged while giving Yugi his famous death glare. I sadly nodded and said goodbye to Yugi.

“Why’d we have to go?” I whined to Seto. He turned around irritably. His blue eyes stared intently into my brown ones.

“Yugi isn’t the kind of person you should be getting along with,” he growled.

“But he’s really nice, Seto.”

“Hmmp. I don’t want you going near him.”

“He’s not dangerous. And besides, I don’t belong to you, Seto.”

“I know but…you’re my best friend, Natalie. I don’t wanna see you get hurt.”

I could feel tears building up. “Seto…” I whispered and wrapped by arms around his waist (I was really short compared to him ^_^). I cried into his uniform as he massaged by back.

“Natalie, calm down,” he said pulling away. “Tell you what, why don’t you come with me after school for a little dueling action?”

“How’d you know I could duel?”

He smirked. “I saw you fidgeting with your deck earlier before.”

I blushed. He had really gotten handsome since I last saw him. “Okay. I’ll call my parents on the way there.” He nodded.

***

After school, I rode with Seto in his limo to his mansion. I used his cell phone to call my parents to tell them where I was going. Needless to say, they weren’t exactly happy about it. I was shuffling my deck the whole way. When we entered the house, I saw a familiar kid with wild black hair.

“Mokuba!” I cried happily.

He recognized me immediately and jumped into my arms. “Natalie!” he said. I hugged him tightly. “I missed you,” he told me.

“Yeah, me too. I haven’t seen you since you were five,” I replied.

Seto was smiling. “Ready for our duel, Nat?” he asked, using my nickname.

“Yep,” I replied. He led me to his soundproof room and brought out two duel discs. “Wow, did you design these yourself?” I asked.

He nodded and showed me how to use the disc. We began the duel. He started off with Saggi the Dark Clown. I countered with my Flame Champion (^_^ he’s one of my faves). I looked at the cards in my hand: Two Pronged Attack, Witty Phantom, Cyber Falcon, and Doma the Angel of Silence. My Flame Champion was still out on the field. I decided to pick up again. My eyes fell upon the card: The Blue Eyes White Dragon.

How did I get it, you ask? Well, my little cousin Rebecca Hawkins (ring any bells?) lent it to me awhile ago. I’ve had it in my deck ever since. My grin was obvious. Seto gritted his teeth as he played his next card: The Judge Man. I lost 300 life points, making mine now 1700 and Seto at 700. I decided I’d throw a monster in defense mode: my Cyber Falcon. Of course Seto had his Judge Man attack it, but thankfully I didn’t lose any life points. I then put Witty Phantom and Doma the Angel of Silence on the field in defense mode. Then I played Two-Pronged Attack.

“No!” Seto cried as his monster and both my monsters were destroyed.

“Tough break, Kaiba. You’re lucky that doesn’t take away life points,” I said. Looking at my new hand again didn’t really increase the size of my grin. My hand consisted of: Feral Imp, Dark Assailant, Shadow of Eyes, Blue Eyes White Dragon, and Gift of the Mystical Elf. I threw my Shadow of Eyes face down and played Feral Imp in attack mode.

Seto frowned. He knew I was planning something. He pulled his next card and smirked. “I summon the Blue Eyes White Dragon!” he shouted. I gasped. My imp was in trouble. His Blue Eyes blew my monster away, leaving me with zero life points. Well, I can’t win every game.

“Good match, Seto,” I said. “I should have played my own Blue Eyes.”

His eyes widened. “You have a BEWD card?”

“Yeah. My cousin Rebecca lent it to me. It was her grandpa’s.”

“You surprise me, Natalie. Perhaps you’re a better duelist than I gave you credit for.”

I smiled. “I’d love to duel again sometime, Seto. Right now I gotta go home.”

“All right. See you in school.”

“I’ll see you later.”

***

The nest day at school during World Cultures, the teacher assigned us a project on Ancient Egypt. I was paired with Yugi as a partner. After class, he walked up to me with a big smile. “Uh, hi Natalie,” he said shyly.

“Hi, Yugi,” I replied, blushing slightly. This struck me as odd. I usually never blushed, but since I moved to Domino I had been blushing a lot lately. Weird.

“Um, I was hoping that you could come over my house today to work on the project.” I bit my lip as I saw Seto rounding the corner.

“Uh, sure,” I answered. “I’ll see you after school.” Yugi smiled and walked away.

Seto walked over with an accusing look on his face. “What was all that about?” he growled.

“We were just assigned a project. I’m simply going over his house to work on it with him,” I said evenly. “No need to get all protective, Seto.”

“Natalie, you can’t trust him.”

“Ugh, you’re hopeless.”

“Look, just…will you come over later tonight?”

“Why?”

“Because we need to talk.”

“Okay,” I sighed. “I’ll be over later.” He smiled.

***

After school, I walked with Yugi to his house. He showed me around the shop and up to his room, where we began to work on the project. “We could make a pyramid,” I suggested. “Me and my friend made one in fifth grade.” Yugi stared at me and finally nodded. We sat down on his bed and began the construction of our pyramid. At 5:00, I decided I’d go to Seto’s house.

When I walked in the door, the first words out of his mouth were, “You’re late.”

I rolled my eyes at him. “Sorry Seto, I *do* have a life you know,” I snapped. He glared at me and I glared right back. “So why did you want me here anyway?” I asked after a long moment.

“I’m trying to create a Duel Monsters computer game, but well…let’s just say that it isn’t working.”

Gee, and here I thought the great Seto Kaiba could do anything. “Ugh. Computers, my favorite subject,” I grumbled. Don’t ask. Computers always seem to hate me. It’s really freaky too. Sometimes the computer will turn off or turn on by itself. Weird, huh? Anyway, Seto led me to his *enormous* computer so that I could help him. It was very complicated, but I eventually got it fixed. I guess I take after my aunt. She fixes computers for a living. “There ya go,” I stated proudly.

Seto stared back at me with an odd look in his eyes. He looked like he was having an internal struggle. “Natalie…can I kiss you?” he asked softly. I could see his cheeks flushing a deep crimson.

I was aware that mine were as well. How was I to answer him? “I don’t think it would be wise,” I heard myself saying. I mentally hit myself. What the hell is wrong with me?! The hottest guy at Domino High and my best friend, was asking if he could kiss me! And all I said was ‘I don’t think it would be wise’. I sounded like a complete retard. I looked at Seto’s face and saw the pain etched there. His heart was aching.

“Well, um…thanks for fixing the computer,” he finally said with his head down.

“No prob,” I replied and stood up to leave. “I’ll see you in school tomorrow.” He nodded and allowed me to go home.

***

The next day, I went over Yugi’s house again, this time for a study session. He and I were on his bed, going over some trigonometry homework. “How do you understand this stuff?” I asked sighing.

“It’s easy,” Yugi replied with a smile. “Here, let me see.” He looked at my work and then back at me. “Well, you understand the material, but you don’t seem to know what you’re doing.”

“Gee, thanks for pointing that out,” I said sarcastically. Yugi blushed.

“Glad I could help.” He stared at me intently. “Natalie?”

“Yes?”

“Can—can I kiss you?” I blinked a few times and stared at him as though he had just sprouted five heads. That’s twice this week that I had been asked that question. First Seto, now Yugi. I bit my lip uncertainly. “Natalie?” Yugi’s voice interrupted my thoughts. “You didn’t answer me.”

“Um…sure,” I answered. We leaned forward and me, expecting a small gentle kiss, wasn’t ready for the intensity of Yugi’s lips on mine. Who knew that such a gentle person could kiss so hard? Yugi’s arms wrapped around me as our kiss deepened. I have never kissed anyone in my life, not like this anyway. I quickly backed away, gasping for breath.

“Sorry,” Yugi said sheepishly. “I’ll, um…see you in school.” I got up to leave with a dazed _expression on my face.

***

The next day in school, I saw Yugi, not Seto, waiting by my locker. Before I could ask what he was doing there, he took me in his arms and kissed me. Our lips had barely touched when I heard whopping noises. We broke away and I gasped. Yugi’s friends, Joey Wheeler and Duke Devlin, were cheering for him. That is, all except Tea Gardner. She looked extremely pissed.

I was blushing when I suddenly saw a familiar tall figure disappearing down the hall. “Seto!” I cried, but it was too late. The damage was done.

***

Seto’s POV:

The bell had just rung for school to start. I was rounding the corner to meet Natalie at her locker. An unwanted sight met my eyes. Yugi Muto was kissing Natalie. It was as if someone had slapped me and ripped out my heart. The girl I had loved for so long was kissing the person I hated. A fire burned inside me. Jealously, anger, whatever emotion I could ever muster was flowing throughout my body.

Before anyone could see me, I fled down the hall, refusing to let my tears fall. I had first period with Yugi and Joey. Just my luck. I sat in the back of the room, casting everyone a glare. Yugi and Joey came in and sat down in front of me. “Dat was fast, Yug,” Joey was saying. “I didn’t expect ya ta be kissin’ her yet.”

“Yeah well, my charm was too much for her to handle,” Yugi replied smugly. I gritted my teeth. He was making fun of Natalie. He had tricked her. I knew this would happen. I just knew it.

“But it’s too bad dat Kaiba didn’t realize her value,” Joey said loud enough for me to hear.

“Yeah, ‘cause Natalie is quite a good kisser,” Yugi added. I had had enough. I was on my feet faster than you can say Duel Monsters. I grabbed Yugi roughly by the collar and he smirked. “A little sensitive, are we, Kaiba?” he sneered. “You should thank me. I got her to open up more.”

“No, you humiliated her,” I growled.

“Did I? How do you know that’s not what she wanted?”

“Because I know Natalie better than you, Yugi. Do you know her birthday? Her favorite game? Her favorite color? Her favorite food? Do you?”

“Maybe I don’t, Kaiba, but I do know that she loves me.”

“You liar!” I barked angrily. “Natalie would never love you!”

“Wanna bet? Has she ever kissed you, Kaiba?” I was silent and he smirked evilly, which was very different for him. “I knew it. She doesn’t even care about you and you’re risking your neck for her? How pathetic is that?”

I refused to let my tears fall. What he was saying was true. Natalie had never once kissed anyone and here she was kissing a guy she barely knew. “I thought you already had a girlfriend, Yugi,” I snarled. “You know, Tea.”

“Oh she’ll understand. She knows how I am. You can put me down now.” I gently lowered him to the floor. Before he went to sit down, he sneered, “And by the way, she’s a very good kisser.” That pissed me off even more. I then used all the strength I had and lunged at him. He was taken by surprise as I threw a punch at his face. I hated him, more than ever now. He was mocking Natalie, and no one lived once they did it in front of me. For our actions, the teacher sent us to the nurse and then gave us detention. Great, my day couldn’t possibly get any worse.

***

Natalie’s POV:

Seto was angry with me and I knew it. He had looked so heartbroken. Yugi could sometimes pick the wrong moments to kiss me. I slowly walked to my first period class. I had English with Tristan and Bakura. They smiled, like always. They were in most of my morning classes and were as friendly as Yugi had been. “Hey guys,” I greeted taking a seat by Bakura. “What’s up?”

“The sky,” Tristan joked. He received a punch in the arm by his girlfriend Satsyuna Yui, whom was on the varsity girls’ softball team. She was the first baseman.

“Stop fooling around, Tristan,” Satsy said and frowned at me. “What’s wrong, Nat?”

“Yugi kissed me,” I answered sullenly.

“And that’s bad? I thought he was the most sought-after guy in school.”

“Kaiba saw,” I muttered and she understood. I saw her lean over to tell Tristan that she needed to talk to me in private. He and Bakura nodded and walked to the other side of the room.

“Natalie, what is your relationship with Kaiba?” Satsy asked seriously.

“We’re best friends. We’d do anything for each other,” I replied.

“And what about Yugi? How does Kaiba feel when he sees you with Yugi?”

“He gets all jealous and acts like a protective brother.”

“Well there’s your answer,” Satsy said. “Kaiba thinks of you as more than just a friend.”

“Huh?”

“He’s in love with you, nutnick.”

I just blinked at her a few times. “Are you serious?” I gasped. “You think Seto loves me?”

“It’s obvious he’s smitten,” she stated.

“But…why can’t he just tell me?”

“He probably wants to, be he saw you with Yugi.”

“Oh no. What’ve I done?”

***

On my way home, I got the distinct feeling that I wasn’t alone. Sure enough, when I turned around, I saw Yugi right behind me. “Hey Nat,” he greeted with a warm smile.

I forced myself to smile back. “Hi Yugi,” I said.

“Where are you going?”

“Uh…home.” Gee, wasn’t that kinda obvious? He must be blind or something.

“Oh, that’s cool.” Ugh, what a retard. Sometimes he reminded me of the stupid jocks back at my old school. But before I could take another step, he took me in his arms roughly and clamped his lips on mine. I tried to smack him, but it was no use. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a black limo drive by with Seto turning away from the window.

***

Seto’s POV:

I cannot believe I had detention with Yugi. As the limo drove down the street, I caught sight of Natalie walking. I was going to role down the window and ask if she wanted a ride, when all of a sudden Yugi went up and kissed her. Once again, my heart cracked and I ordered the driver to hurry back to the mansion.

***

Natalie’s POV:

After thinking things over, I decided to visit Seto at his house. We needed to straighten things out between us. I rang the doorbell and he opened the door in a rather sour mood.

“What do you want?” he growled glaring down at me with great dislike.

“I wanted to say I’m sorry,” I replied staring at my feet. They had suddenly become very fascinating…

“Sorry for what? Sorry for lying? Sorry for betraying me?”

I lowered my head in shame. “I’m sorry for all of it,” I sobbed. “Please forgive me.”

Seto narrowed his eyes at me. “How can I forgive you for…for kissing Yugi Muto?”

“I know I hurt you, Seto. I understand now why you were so upset.”

“Really?” he said with a hint of amusement in his voice. “Then tell me.”

“You love me, don’t you?”

His eyes widened in shock. “Maybe I do, maybe I don’t,” he spat arrogantly.

“Seto, stop being a prick,” I retorted.

“I’m not being a prick, Natalie.”

“Yes you are. You’re too chicken to admit your feelings for me.”

“I am not!”

“Then say it.”

“Fine, I will.” I waited for him to speak, but instead of telling me how he felt, he took me in his arms and held me close to him. His breath was getting heavier. “I love you, Natalie,” he said finally. I looked into his eyes. My hands caressed his face as he smiled at me.

“I love you too, Seto,” I replied. I expected him to kiss me with a fiery passion, but instead, the kiss started out simple and gentle. He seemed nervous. Maybe because he knew that I had kissed someone before him. His lips felt so right on mine. His tongue was pressing against my lips for entrance into my mouth. I really wanted this. But before we could take it any further, we separated.

“Let’s go inside,” Seto suggested and I nodded. We made ourselves comfy on the couch. I laid my head in Seto’s lap. He looked down at me and kissed me softly. I held the hand he had pressed to my cheek tightly.

“Hey big broth—” we heard Mokuba start. He silenced himself once he saw us making out and walked out of the room. I was so happy! I couldn’t wait to call Satsy and tell her all about it!
