Shimmer

I look into the water

To see what's there to see

I see my face

Looking back at me

I see the child I was

So harshly pushed away

I see the laughter lines

Are fading more each day

I see the scars of wounds gone past

Knowing then

When I made them

They would last

I see the angry teenager

Throwing a brick against her mirror

And see the glass imitate water

In its startling shimmer

I see dark eyes

Gone cold with years

And an aging face

Stained with tears

I see cracked lips

And dry black hair

Draping around my face

Like curtains of despair

I see myself

A sailor

of failure

Yet I also see

A glow in my cheeks

Reminding me that I have youth to bequeath

This pitiful soul

So tired with grief

And with a renewed smile

Almost rusty with old

I make the flat, bitter water

Shimmer like gold

Don't let one mistake that may have

ruined youth childhood ruin your life.

Make the best of things

while you are young and look to

the future and not wallow in the depths of the past.  There is light after dark

Always
